Members of the Institution

The members of the Institution shall consist of all persons from time to time admitted, elected or transferred to any class of membership in accordance with this Constitution.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Honorary  Fellows

An Honorary Fellow shall be a person who shall have rendered conspicuous service to the Institution or the profession of engineering or is eminent in engineering or in public service, who shall be elected by the Council.

Fellows

Every candidate for election or transfer to the Class of Fellows shall satisfy the Council that he meets all requirements stipulated

(a)    that he/she

  •  is at least 36 years of age,
  •  has held a position of such superior responsibility for at least five years in the science or practice of engineering as in the opinion of Council justifies his election and
  •  has been an active Member of the Institution for at least ten years.

(b)    or that he

  • has such knowledge of the science or practice of engineering and has acquired such eminence in his profession that his election as a Fellow would in the opinion of Council be in the interests of the Institution and
  • is engaged in the science or practice of engineering.

Every candidate for election or transfer to the Class of Fellows shall also submit a citation detailing; personal particulars and qualifications, his contribution to IET and his contribution to the engineering profession. The elected Fellow shall give; a Fellowship lecture or publish a paper in a respectable Journal or present a paper in a meeting organized by IET in his area of competence within two years after election. Failure to do so shall result in the honor being withdrawn”.

 

Senior Members

Every candidate for election or transfer to the Class of Senior Members shall satisfy the Council that:

  • he is at least 33 years of age
  • he has at least eight years of additional professional experience after being elected Member
  • he has acquired a level of engineering expertise in his field of engineering equivalent to that obtained by;
  1. a postgraduate diploma, or
  2. a significant number of continuing professional development courses, or work experience at the forefront of engineering practice.

Members (Corporate)

Every candidate for election or transfer to Class of Members, shall satisfy the  Council that he is:-

(a) A member of an Institution of Engineers the membership of which is recognized for the time being by the Council as furnishing sufficient guarantee of academic knowledge of and practical experience in engineering; or

(b) a person who has attained the age of 25 years and who

(i) is a holder of a degree, diploma or license of a university or school of engineering, which is recognized by the Council as furnishing sufficient guarantee of an adequate academic training; and

(ii) has submitted a satisfactory practical training report or detailed curriculum vitae and/or passed a professional interview as approved by the Council to testify that he has had not less than three years practical experience of such a nature as to satisfy the Council as a professionally qualified engineer or has had such practical training in engineering as may be approved by the Council; or

(c) a person who attained the age of 25 years and who is a holder of a degree, diploma or license of a University or School of Engineering which is NOT recognized by the Council as furnishing sufficient guarantee of an adequate academic training; but

(i) has followed a course of training as prescribed or approved by the Institution and passed a Special Examination for Graduates; and

(ii) has passed a Professional Interview as approved by the Council.

Associate Members

Every candidate for election or transfer to the Class of Associate Members shall:-

(a)   be at least 24 years of age.

(b)   be a holder of at least a degree,  diploma  or license of a university or school of engineering awarded after a minimum of three years of full-time study but not recognized by the Council as meeting the academic requirements.

(c)  have a minimum of 3 years of practical experience.

Companions

Every candidate for admission or transfer to the Class of Companions shall satisfy the Council that, not being an engineer by profession, he has either:-

  • rendered important services to engineering in the field of science, education, commerce, finance or law or;
  • been so connected with the applications of engineering science that his admission would be conducive to the interests of the Institution.

Graduates

Every candidate for admission or transfer to the Class of Graduates shall satisfy the Council that he:-

(a) is at least 21 years of age;

(b) holds one of the educational qualifications;

  • is a holder of a degree, diploma or license of a university or school of engineering, which is recognized by the Council as furnishing sufficient guarantee of an adequate academic training; and
  • has submitted a satisfactory practical training report or detailed curriculum vitae and/or passed a professional interview as approved by the Council to testify that he has had not less than three years practical experience of such a nature as to satisfy the Council as a professionally qualified engineer or has had such practical training in engineering as may be approved by the Council.

Affiliate Fellows

The Council may at their discretion transfer any person who has been an Affiliate Member for at least 10 years to the Class of Affiliate Fellows.  

Affiliate Members

The Council may at their discretion admit any person who has successfully completed and passed an approved Technicians Course and has had thereafter at least three years practical experience conducive to promoting their respective trade. 

Affiliate  Students

The Council may at their discretion admit to the Institution Affiliate Students who may be taking a Technicians or similar course in any Branch of Engineering Science.

Affiliate  Firms

(a)  Membership to this class shall comprise engineering consulting firms, construction firms, institutions of higher learning or engineering organizations / companies which the Council may elect to this Class.

(b)  Every applicant to this class shall, at the time of application, have in its management at least one engineer who is a Corporate Member or at least five Corporate Members employed by the firm.
